Uburundi and Burundi

In Rundi the country is Uburundi and its language kiRundi. French and nearly every other language use the shorter form without the initial U, Burundi; among the languages listed, only Kinyarwanda shares the Rundi form Uburundi.

Elsewhere the name changes mostly in its endings and vowels. Esperanto has Burundo, Latin Burundia, Malagasy Borondia and Norman French Bouroundie; Irish puts the article in front and mutates the first consonant, An Bhurúin. Volapük builds its form from the stem alone, Rundiyän. In Cyrillic the name is Бурунди, the form that Russian, Bulgarian and a dozen other languages share.

The political capital moved from Bujumbura to Gitega in 2019; Bujumbura remains the economic capital, and its own table is kept below. Its name is written Bužumbura in Latvian, Bużumbura in Polish and Budžumbura in Bosnian and Serbian, while Esperanto adds its noun ending, Buĵumburo.
