Names are in English and, where they differ, French; Nunavut adds Inuktitut syllabics with the Latin spelling. The seat follows each unit.

Codes: ISO 3166-2:CA on the ISO Online Browsing Platform, as tabulated in Wikipedia’s ISO 3166-2:CA, checked 28 October 2026. Later changes in British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories: Wikipedia’s List of regional districts of British Columbia, List of census divisions of Newfoundland and Labrador (citing Statistics Canada) and Regions of the Northwest Territories, checked 28 October 2026.

02 · How the list works

Why the second level differs from province to province

Canada has no single second level. Each province decides how it divides itself, so the table mixes several kinds of unit. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island keep the counties of the colonial era; British Columbia governs through regional districts; Ontario combines counties, districts, regional municipalities and cities that stand on their own. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador appear here only as numbered census divisions, the statistical grid Statistics Canada lays over areas without county government, and Quebec is listed by its 17 administrative regions.

Language follows the same patchwork. Quebec names its regions in French only, Manitoba and New Brunswick publish both languages, and the two lists differ in just two places: Winnipeg Capital is Winnipeg Capitale, and the county of Saint John is Saint-Jean. In Nunavut the regions also carry Inuktitut names: Kitikmeot is ᕿᑎᕐᒥᐅᑦ, Qitirmiut, and its seat Cambridge Bay is ᐃᖃᓗᒃᑑᑦᑎᐊᖅ, Iqaluktuuttiaq; Kivalliq is governed from Rankin Inlet, ᑲᖏᖅᖠᓂᖅ, Kangiqɫiniq.

Some of the lists have moved on. British Columbia split Comox-Strathcona into Comox Valley and Strathcona in 2008, and Skeena-Queen Charlotte was renamed North Coast in 2016. Newfoundland and Labrador gained an eleventh census division for Nunatsiavut. The Northwest Territories now work with five regions instead of Fort Smith and Inuvik. The first level is unchanged since Nunavut took the code CA-NU in 2000.

03 · Questions

Questions about the subdivisions of Canada

Does Canada have counties?

Some provinces do. Nova Scotia has 18, New Brunswick 15 and Prince Edward Island 3, and Ontario has 21 counties beside its districts and regional municipalities. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador are divided into census divisions instead.

What are the three regions of Nunavut in Inuktitut?

ᕿᑎᕐᒥᐅᑦ (Qitirmiut, Kitikmeot), ᑭᕙᓪᓕᖅ (Kivalliq) and ᕿᑭᖅᑖᓗᒃ (Qikiqtaaluk), governed from Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit.

Which province has no second level in this list?

None of the provinces. Yukon, a territory, is the only unit without one.
