How French and English name the same unit
A French name and an English name stand side by side for every unit, but they are not built the same way. French puts the category first and joins the name with an article, Région de l'Adamaoua or Département de la Vina; English puts the name first and the category after it, Adamawa Region, Vina Department. Two-river names follow the pattern too: Mefou et Afamba becomes Mefou and Afamba.
Accents are the other difference. The English column drops the French accents, so Ngaoundéré is Ngaoundere, Eséka Eseka and Kaélé Kaele. A few names are translated outright: Haute-Sanaga is Upper Sanaga, Hauts-Plateaux High Plateaus, Vallée-du-Ntem Ntem Valley, and Océan keeps only its accent change. Adamaoua and Adamawa are the French and English spellings of one name.
The departments are subdivided further into arrondissements, in English subdivisions, and in remote areas into districts; those levels are not listed here.
Departments of Cameroon by region
All 58 departments (départements, called divisions in English usage) with the town that serves as their seat. French names carry the article the department takes, du, de la or des, which the English forms leave out.

Departments: the 2016 edition of this list, checked against Wikipedia's Departments of Cameroon on 28 October 2026. The single Mbam department of that list is shown as today's Mbam-et-Inoubou (seat Bafia) and Mbam-et-Kim (seat Ntui). Three seats are spelled as their department articles give them: Mamfé for Manyu, Mundemba for Ndian and Bangangté for Ndé.
From provinces to regions
Until 2008 the ten units were provinces. A presidential decree of 12 November 2008 renamed them regions, and ISO 3166-2:CM now lists them under that category. Each region is run by a governor appointed by the president, each department by a prefect.
The list above differs from older ones in the Centre region, where the former Mbam department appears as two: Mbam-et-Inoubou around Bafia and Mbam-et-Kim around Ntui, which accounts for the Centre region's ten departments.
Questions about the subdivisions of Cameroon
How many departments does Cameroon have?
58, from four in the East, Littoral, North and South regions to ten in the Centre.
Is the Far North the same as Extrême-Nord?
Yes. Extrême-Nord is the French name, Far North the English name ISO uses; older English lists also say Extreme North.
What is the capital of the Southwest Region?
Buea, written Buéa in French. The region's departments are Fako, Koupé-Manengouba, Lebialem, Manyu, Mémé and Ndian.
