Djibouti, Dschibuti, Yibuti: one sound, many spellings

The country and its capital share one name, so the spellings below serve for both in most languages. Everything turns on the first sound, written dj in French. 21 languages keep the French spelling, English, Danish and Finnish among them. German writes Dschibuti, Spanish Yibuti, Italian Gibuti, Hungarian Dzsibuti, Polish Dżibuti and Turkish Cibuti; Croatian, Slovenian and the two Sorbian languages share Džibuti.

East African languages simplify it to Jibuti, in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Igbo and Wolof. Somali, one of the languages of the country, says Jabuuti, and Afar has Gabuuti. Czech and Latvian separate the state from the city: Džibutsko and Džibutija name the country, Džibuti the town.

In Arabic the name is جيبوتي, Ǧībūtī; the full title جمهورية جيبوتي means the Republic of Djibouti. Cyrillic gives Джибути (Džibuti) in Russian, Bulgarian and fifteen other languages.

Regions of Djibouti in French, Arabic and Somali

Djibouti has five regions and the city of Djibouti, which forms a unit of its own. Each name is given in French, in Arabic with a transliteration, and in Somali; the seat is named in French with its Arabic and Somali forms.

Codes: ISO 3166-2:DJ on the ISO Online Browsing Platform, read from the English Wikipedia table that reproduces it on 28 October 2026, with newsletter I-7 of 13 September 2005. ISO spells the fifth region Tadjourah. Names in the three languages and seats: the 2017 edition of this list.

04 · RegionsU+0043 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C

Somali c and Arabic ʿayn

Set side by side, the Arabic and Somali names show how the two spellings match. Where Arabic has the letter ʿayn, Somali writes c: Ali Sabieh, علي سابيه (ʿAlī Sābīh) in Arabic, is Calisabiix in Somali, and Arta, عرتا (ʿArtā), is Carta. The final h of Sābīh appears as x at the end of Calisabiix.

Each region bears the name of its seat. ISO 3166-2 added Arta in newsletter I-7 of 13 September 2005, together with a new list source; it now gives the Arabic forms in the BGN/PCGN romanisation, as ‘Alī Şabīḩ or Tājūrah. Somali forms differ further from French in the north: Obock is Obokh, Tadjoura Tojora.
