Subdivisions of Spain in local languages: communities and provinces
Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and below them into 50 provinces. This list gives every community and province in Spanish and, where the region has a language of its own, in Aragonese, Asturian, Basque, Catalan, Extremaduran or Galician, together with the capital and the ISO 3166-2 code.

Seven languages on one map
Every name on this list appears in Spanish first, and where a region has a language of its own, that form follows. Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands add Catalan, Galicia Galician, the Basque Country and Navarre Basque. Aragon, Asturias and Extremadura add the names in Aragonese, Asturian and Extremaduran, so that Huesca is Uesca, Oviedo Uviéu and Cáceres Caçris. In the Val d’Aran of Catalonia, Aranese adds a third form, and Ceuta and Melilla carry Arabic and Berber names.
Where ISO 3166-2 names a province differently from the Spanish form of the list, the ISO column shows its name. Seven provinces appear there under a regional or a bilingual form: La Coruña is A Coruña, Gerona Girona, Lérida Lleida, Orense Ourense, and the Basque provinces are Álava / Araba, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia.
The 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities

Codes and names that changed
A community that consists of a single province used to share that province’s code. The Balearic Islands were the first to get their own, ES-IB instead of ES-PM, in 2002, when Gerona’s ES-GE also became ES-GI. In 2010 the other six followed: Asturias went from ES-O to ES-AS, Cantabria from ES-S to ES-CB, La Rioja from ES-LO to ES-RI, Madrid from ES-M to ES-MD, Murcia from ES-MU to ES-MC and Navarre from ES-NA to ES-NC. The provinces kept the old codes.
The provinces have kept their borders, but several have changed their official names to the regional form. ISO 3166-2 lists the regional name and keeps the former Spanish form beside it, as with Girona and Gerona or Ourense and Orense; for Alicante, Castellón and Valencia it gives both languages.
