Haïti and Ayiti: the name in two official languages

Haiti has two official names because it has two official languages: République d’Haïti in French and Repiblik d’Ayiti in Haitian Creole. Creole spells the name as it sounds, without the silent h, and Bambara, Kongo and Wolof share the same form Ayiti. French, Dutch, Afrikaans and Norman write Haïti with a diaeresis, Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Occitan Haití with an accent, and English, Czech and Welsh plain Haiti.

The vowels shift from language to language. Hausa has Haita, Igbo Heti, Tagalog and Cornish Hayti, Kinyarwanda and Walloon Hayiti, and Esperanto Haitio. Russian, Kazakh and Uzbek start with Г, Гаити, Gaiti, while Ukrainian writes Гаїті and Bulgarian Хаити. Japanese allows ハイティ and ハイチ, Chinese writes 海地, Hǎidì, and Korean 아이티, Aiti, without any h at all.

Port-au-Prince is the same in French, English and German. Creole has Pòtoprens, Esperanto Portoprinco, Spanish Puerto Príncipe and Portuguese Porto Príncipe, which translate the French words. Chinese also translates, 太子港, Tàizǐ Gǎng, while Russian and most other languages render the sound: Порт-о-Пренс, Port-o-Prens.

05 · Departments

Department names and seats in Creole

Creole writes the department names as they are spoken. Département de l’Artibonite becomes Depatman Latibonit, with the French article fused into the name, and Grand’Anse becomes Grandans. The compass names shorten: Nord is Nò, Nord-Est Nòdès, Nord-Ouest Nòdwès, Ouest Lwès, Sud Sid and Sud-Est Sidès.

The seats follow the same pattern. Cap-Haïtien, the seat of Nord, is Okap or Kap Ayisyen in Creole, Les Cayes in Sud is Okay, Hinche in Centre is Ench and Port-de-Paix in Nord-Ouest is Pòdpè. Nippes, the department that ISO added last, has its seat at Miragoâne, Miragwàn in Creole.
