Seats, numbered districts and spellings
A Liberian county is usually governed from a town with a name of its own. Bong is run from Gbarnga, Lofa from Voinjama, Nimba from Sanniquellie, Grand Gedeh from Zwedru and River Gee from Fish Town. Montserrado, the county of the capital, has its seat at Bensonville, not in Monrovia, which appears in the district list as Greater Monrovia. Only Rivercess shares its name with its seat.
District names follow local usage and are not always settled in spelling. Grand Bassa numbers four of its seven districts from 1 to 4, Sinoe has Sanquin 1, 2 and 3 and Maryland Karluway 1 and 2. Several names join two places, such as Pleebo/Sodoken in Maryland or Boe and Quilla in Nimba, and others appear in other sources with or without hyphens, Mambah Kaba or Mambah-Kaba, Garr-Bain or Garr Bain.
Grand Kru has the most districts in the list, 18, followed by Nimba and Sinoe with 17 each; Bomi and Margibi have four. Wikipedia's Districts of Liberia counts 136 administrative districts today, one more than this list; among the districts it adds are Tehr in Bomi, Penicess in Grand Kru and Webbo in River Gee.
