Portuguese, Danish and Swedish keep the cedilla of Moçambique; Swahili alone uses a name of its own, Msumbiji.

02 · NamesU+00E7 LATIN SMALL LETTER C WITH CEDILLA

Moçambique, Mosambik, Msumbiji

Moçambique is Portuguese, the only official language, and the cedilla goes with it into Danish and Swedish. The adjective is moçambicano, the currency the metical. Spanish, French, Dutch and Hausa write Mozambique without the cedilla, and that spelling became the English one.

From there the name splits along spelling habits. Languages that write the k sound with k end in -ik: Mozambik in Polish, Turkish, Hungarian and Croatian, Mosambik in German, Czech, Finnish and Norwegian, where the z becomes s. Romanian has Mozambic, Catalan and Occitan Moçambic, Italian Mozambico, Irish Mósaimbíc. Swahili goes its own way with Msumbiji.

Arabic writes موزامبيق, also with the article, الموزامبيق. Chinese uses 莫桑比克, Japanese モザンビーク.

05 · Seats

Maputo and the provincial seats

Until 1976 the capital was called Lourenço Marques (Wikipedia, Maputo). That name does not appear in the list; Maputo is the form every language uses today, with small changes: Maputu in Latvian, Lithuanian and Tetum, Мапуту in Russian and Ukrainian but Мапуто in Bulgarian and Serbian, and Mapútó with accents in Icelandic.

The provincial seats rarely share the name of their province. Cabo Delgado is governed from Pemba, Niassa from Lichinga, Manica from Chimoio, Zambézia from Quelimane, and Maputo Province from Matola, a separate city next to the capital.
