Berber and Kabyle write the name in Tifinagh as well as in Latin letters; Greek lists two forms, Νίγηρ and Νίγηρας.
Níger, Nijer, Nijar: the same word in many spellings
Niger keeps its spelling in English, French and German, but the stress and the vowels move. Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Icelandic write Níger with an accent, Galician and Asturian Níxer, Occitan Nigèr. Turkish and Tetum spell it as it sounds, Nijer, Haitian Creole Nijè, Hausa Nijar. Irish adds the article, An Nígir, and Cornish says Pow Nijer, the country of Niger.
Arabic has two spellings, النيجر and النايجر, the second closer to the English pronunciation. Hindi नाइजर and Japanese ニジェール reflect the English and the French way of saying the name. Greek has both Νίγηρ and Νίγηρας. The table also gives the Tifinagh forms of Berber and Kabyle, ⵏⵏⴻⵊⵉⵔ and ⵏⵉⵊⴻⵔ.

The 7 regions of Niger and the capital Niamey
Niger has seven regions (régions), each named after its seat, and the urban community of Niamey, which stands beside them with the same rank. ISO 3166-2 numbers the regions 1 to 7 in alphabetical order and gives Niamey the 8.

Codes and names: ISO 3166-2:NE on the ISO Online Browsing Platform, as tabulated in Wikipedia's ISO 3166-2:NE, checked 28 October 2026. The entry lists the same seven regions and Niamey as the national list given here.
Niamey and the seven regions
Niamey sits outside the regions as a communauté urbaine, an urban community with the rank of a region. In the exonym list the capital barely changes: Polish Niamej, Portuguese Niamei, Lithuanian Niamėjus, Esperanto Niamejo, and Ниамей in Russian and Bulgarian.
Each region takes the name of its seat, and in French the name follows the word région with de or d’: Région d’Agadez, Région de Tillabéri. ISO 3166-2 drops the word and lists the bare names, as the column beside the French names shows.
