Palaestina and Filasṭīn: two forms of one name

The list divides into two families. One starts from Latin Palaestina and runs through Palestine in English and French, Palästina in German, Palestyna in Polish, Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínī) in Greek and Палестина (Palestina) in Russian. The other follows Arabic فلسطين (Filasṭīn), which Pashto and Sindhi write the same way and Persian and Urdu with the Persian final yeh, فلسطین: Turkish and Crimean Tatar say Filistin, Kurmanji Filistîn, Uzbek and Tajik Falastin, Azerbaijani Fələstin, Somali Falastiin.

Some languages hold both forms. Malay lists Palestin and Falastin, Tatar Фәлистыйн (Fälistín) and Палестина (Palestina), Belarusian Палестына and Палесціна, and the Caucasus Kurdish entry gives four. Punjabi has ਫਿਲੀਸਤੀਨ (Pʰilīstīn) beside ਫ਼ਲਸਤੀਨ (Falastīn). Old Norse stands apart with three names built on Jórsala-, among them Jórsalaland.

The 16 governorates in ISO 3166-2:PS

ISO 3166-2 has coded 16 governorates (محافظات, muḥāfaẓāt) for this entry since December 2011, eleven in the West Bank and five in the Gaza Strip. Each row gives the Arabic name with the romanisation ISO uses, the English name, the code and the seat.

Codes, romanised and English names: ISO 3166-2:PS on the ISO Online Browsing Platform (Newsletter II-3 of 2011, OBP updates of 2013 and 2015), read from the English Wikipedia mirror on 28 October 2026, whose Arabic-script column is given there for reference. Seats: Governorates of Palestine, English Wikipedia, same date, citing the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics; no seat is given for North Gaza because that source does not cite one.

From two districts to 16 governorates

The 2016 edition of this list divided the territory into two districts (مناطق, manāṭiq): the West Bank, منطقة الضفة الغربية (Minṭaqâẗu ḍ-Ḍiffâẗi l-Ġarbīyâ), with Ramallah as its centre, and the Gaza Strip, منطقة قطاع غزة (Minṭaqâẗu Qiṭāʿi Ġazzâ), with Gaza. ISO 3166-2 had carried the entry without any codes since August 2002 and added the 16 governorates in its newsletter of December 2011.

On 6 February 2013 ISO recorded the full name State of Palestine after a notification from the United Nations, and on 27 November 2015 it added a romanisation system for Arabic and respelled three governorate names, now Qalqīlyah, Arīḩā wal Aghwār and Rām Allāh wal Bīrah.
