Paraguay subdivisions in Spanish and Guarani: departments, districts
Paraguay is divided into 17 departments and the capital district of Asunción, and below them into districts, each governed as a municipality: 263 in the current count. The departments and their capitals are given in Spanish and Guarani, the districts in Spanish with their earlier names where they had one.

Tetãvore and departamento: reading the Guarani names
Each department heading carries its Guarani name, formed with tetãvore, department, in front of the place name. Guarani writes k where Spanish writes c, and adds an apostrophe within some names: Caaguazú is Tetãvore Ka’aguasu, Caacupé, the capital of Cordillera, is Ka’akupe, Villarrica is Villarrika. Some capitals have Guarani names of their own: Ciudad del Este is Kuarahyresẽme, San Pedro del Ycuamandiyú is Ykuamandyju, and Asunción is simply Paraguay.
Below the departments, the districts (distritos) are listed in Spanish, alphabetically within each department. Many carry the full name of a person, which the 2016 list often abbreviated, and the second column keeps an earlier name where the municipality had one: Belén in Concepción was founded as Nuestra Señora de Belén de los Mbayá.

Departments in the order of their ISO 3166-2 numbers, then the capital district. The last column notes districts that were added or renamed since the 2016 list.

Districts, earlier names and dates: Anexo:Municipios de Paraguay, Spanish Wikipedia, read on 28 October 2026; its department headings give 13 municipalities for Concepción while its table lists 14, which are all shown here. Departments and codes: ISO 3166-2:PY, read from the English Wikipedia mirror on the same date. Guarani names and capitals: the 2016 edition of this list.
Districts added to the list since 2016, from Alto Paraguay to Presidente Hayes
The current list counts 263 districts against the 235 of the 2016 edition. Some were created after 2016, such as Arroyito in November 2016 or Itacuá in July 2021; others were already municipalities then and were missing from the list, as the dates in the table show. Concepción gained Arroyito, Itacuá and Paso Horqueta among others, Canindeyú Laurel, Maracaná, Puerto Adela, Yasy Cañy, Yby Pytá and Ybyrarobaná, and Presidente Hayes Campo Aceval, Nueva Asunción and two others. In Alto Paraguay the list now names Bahía Negra, Capitán Carmelo Peralta, Fuerte Olimpo and Puerto Casado.
Seven names of the 2016 list do not appear in the current one: La Victoria and Mayor Pablo Lagerenza in Alto Paraguay, Colonia Fernheim, Doctor Pedro P. Peña, General Eugenio A. Garay and Neuland in Boquerón, and Pozo Colorado in Presidente Hayes. Boquerón now counts four districts, among them one with the name of the department.
