02 · NamesU+0642 ARABIC LETTER QAF

In Arabic the country is قطر, Qaṭar, and the state is دولة قطر (Dawlâẗu Qaṭar), the State of Qatar. The adjective is القطري (al-qaṭarī), the currency the riyal of 100 dirhams.

Spellings abroad split on the first consonant. English, French, Italian and many others keep the Q of the Arabic Qāf, while Czech, Polish, Turkish and most Cyrillic alphabets write Katar; Azerbaijani has Гатар in Cyrillic, Avar Къатӏар and Lezgian Къатар. Irish, Walloon and Nahuatl write Catar, Welsh Cwatar, Samoan and Tongan Kuata. Malayalam renders the name ഖത്തർ (Kʰattar), with a doubled t.

Doha changes less. Russian, Bulgarian and Mongolian write Доха (Doȟa), Polish and Slovak drop the h for Dauha and Dauhá, and Persian and Pashto write دوحه.

Codes: ISO 3166-2:QA, as tabulated in Wikipedia’s ISO 3166-2:QA, checked 28 October 2026; QA-SH was added on 23 November 2017, and in Newsletter II-3 of 13 December 2011 ISO dropped Al Ghuwayrīyah, Al Jumaylīyah and Jarīyān al Bāţnah. Arabic names and seats: the 2016 edition of this list; Al Shahaniya has no seat in it.

05 · Municipalities

From ten municipalities to eight

The municipal map has changed twice since ISO first coded it. In December 2011 ISO removed Al Ghuwayrīyah, Al Jumaylīyah and Jarīyān al Bāţnah from its list and added Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin (Al Daayen). In November 2017 Al Shahaniya, الشحانية, followed as the eighth.

ISO writes the northern municipality of Al Khor as Al Khawr wa adh Dhakhīrah, after its two towns. Al Shamal, the north, is the one municipality named after a direction; its seat is ar-Ruways.
