Four languages, one administrative map
Slovak is the only official language at national level, but the list adds three others where they have a place. Hungarian covers the five southern regions, from Bratislava to Košice, where the Hungarian minority lives and where nearly every town has a Hungarian name: Pozsony, Kassa, Nyitra, Nagyszombat. Czech appears for the Trenčín and Trnava regions on the Moravian border, Polish for the Žilina region beneath the Tatras.
Hungarian district names end in the adjective suffix -i plus járás, so Revúca, Nagyrőce in Hungarian, gives Nagyrőcei járás, and Žiar nad Hronom, Garamszentkereszt, gives Garamszentkereszti járás. Polish uses powiat and adapts the spelling: Čadca is Czadca, Námestovo Namiestów, Tvrdošín Twardoszyn. Czech forms differ from Slovak mostly in single letters, as in Trenčínský kraj.
The eight regions of Slovakia with ISO 3166-2 codes
Each region (kraj) in Slovak, with the Hungarian, Czech or Polish name the list gives for it, the seat and the ISO 3166-2 code. The Prešov region has no second name on the list.

Bratislava is divided into five districts and Košice into four; they keep their Roman numerals in every language.
Regions since 1996
Slovakia has had eight regions and 79 districts since 1996, when the kraje were created again after six years without them. ISO 3166-2 codes only the regions. Since 2002 the same eight areas also form the self-governing regions, so the borders in this list serve both administrations.
Each district is named after its seat. The capital and Košice are the exceptions in shape: five Bratislava districts and four Košice districts all have the city as their seat, and Košice-okolie, the surrounding district, is administered from Košice as well.
