Sranan Tongo has a name of its own, Sranankondre; Albanian and Sicilian write Surinami, and Arabic gives the name with and without the article.

02 · NamesU+0053 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER S

Republiek Suriname, Sranankondre, Surinami

The official name is Republiek Suriname in Dutch, the only official language, and the Republic of Suriname in English. The adjective is Surinaams. Sranan Tongo, the creole spoken across the country, calls it Sranankondre, the Surinamese country, or simply Sranan, and the republic Ripoliku Sranan.

The name may go back to the Surinen, an Indigenous people living on the coast when Europeans arrived. British settlers of the 1630s wrote Surinam, and that spelling long remained standard in English; the country became independent from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975 as Suriname. Albanian and Sicilian add a final i, Surinami; Arabic writes سورينام (Sūrīnām).
