02 · NamesU+0254 LATIN SMALL LETTER OPEN O

Togo, Togas, Tô-gô

The official name is République togolaise, the Togolese Republic, and the adjective togolais. French is the official language. The short name Togo is so brief that most languages take it unchanged: English, German, Spanish, Afrikaans, Turkish and dozens of others write Togo, Cyrillic languages Того, Armenian Տոգո, Greek Τόγκο, Tógko.

Where the name changes, it bends to the grammar or the sounds of the language. Lithuanian adds its ending, Togas, Samogitian Togs; Latgalian writes Toga, Latin Togum, Esperanto Togolo beside Togo. Azerbaijani has Toqo with q, Bambara Tɔgo with the open o, Quechua Tuqu, Zulu iTogo with the noun prefix, and Vietnamese splits it into syllables, Tô-gô.

The capital is Lomé in French and, without the accent, Lome in English and Latvian. Russian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian write Ломе, Arabic لومي (Lūmī), Chinese 洛美 (Luòměi).
