Subdivisions of the United States: counties, parishes, boroughs, seats
The 50 states of the United States are divided into counties, called parishes in Louisiana and boroughs and census areas in Alaska; Virginia and a few other states add independent cities. This list gives 3251 such units in the states, the District of Columbia and five territories, each with its seat, and the local names in Hawaiian, Louisiana French, New Mexico and Puerto Rico Spanish, Samoan and Chamorro.

Counties, parishes, boroughs and their seats
Each state appears with its county-level units in alphabetical order and the seat of each, the town where its government sits. A unit without a seat in the table is governed from the place of the same name. The type column tells the kinds apart: 3005 counties, 64 parishes in Louisiana, 14 boroughs and 11 census areas in Alaska, and independent cities in Virginia, Maryland, Missouri and Nevada.
Six states and territories also have their units listed in a second language. Hawaii has kalana, the Hawaiian word for county, so Kauai is Kauaʻi with its seat Līhuʻe; Louisiana has paroisses, where East Baton Rouge becomes Bâton-Rouge Est; New Mexico and Puerto Rico have condados and municipios in Spanish; American Samoa has itu, its districts, and motu, its islands; and the villages of Guam carry Chamorro names, Hagåtña or Inalåhan.

Kusilvak, Utqiaġvik and the Connecticut planning regions
A handful of entries have changed since the list was compiled. In Alaska the Wade Hampton Census Area has been called Kusilvak since 2015, the Valdez-Cordova Census Area was split into the Chugach and Copper River census areas on 2 January 2019, and Barrow, the seat of the North Slope Borough, took the name Utqiaġvik in 2016.
In Connecticut the Census Bureau approved a proposal in 2022 to count nine planning regions as county equivalents in place of the eight historical counties; the change was fully implemented in 2024. The list keeps the eight counties with the towns named as their seats. Rhode Island shortened its official name in 2020 and is listed here as the State of Rhode Island.
