Papal Conclaves 2005 and 2013: Cardinal Electors, Benedict and Francis
The two conclaves of 2005 and 2013 in one place: every cardinal elector with birth date, country and office, the offices again in Italian, Spanish, Polish, Arabic, Hindi or Thai, and the papal names Benedict XVI and Francis, and Roman Catholic Church, in their own scripts across more than 90 languages.
Two conclaves, two names
A conclave is the closed meeting of the cardinal electors that chooses a pope. The conclave of 18 and 19 April 2005 elected Joseph Ratzinger, who took the name Benedict XVI, and the conclave of 12 and 13 March 2013 elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who took the name Francis. Each list below has 115 voting cardinals and two who stayed away; Bergoglio already appears among the electors of 2005.
The offices show how international the College of Cardinals is and how much of it runs in Italian. Curia offices are written in Italian, as in Prefetto della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, the office Ratzinger held in 2005. Diocesan archbishops carry the title in the language of their see: Arzobispo de Buenos Aires, Archevêque de Lyon, Arcybiskup krakowski, Uskup Agung Jakarta, Askofu mkuu wa Nairobi, Arsobispo ng Maynila. Some names have a native form, so the Ukrainian Lubomyr Huzar is Любомир ГУЗАР, the Lebanese patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi بشارة بطرس الراعي, and the Hong Kong bishop John Tong Hon 汤汉.
Papal names are translated into almost every language. Benedict is Benedikt in German and Czech, Benoît in French, Benedetto in Italian, Bento in Portuguese and Benedek in Hungarian, and the regnal number moves around it: Hungarian ⅩⅥ. Benedek pápa and Turkish Papa 16. Benedikt put the number first. Francis follows the same pattern, with Francesco in Italian, Franciszek in Polish, Ferenc in Hungarian and Phanxicô in Vietnamese.
Since these lists were compiled, a third conclave has met. On 7 and 8 May 2025, 133 cardinal electors gathered in the Sistine Chapel and elected Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Leo XIV.1 The tables below cover 2005 and 2013 only.
Cardinal electors of the 2005 conclave
115 cardinal electors took part; 2 more were entitled to vote and stayed away (Jaime Lachica SIN, Adolfo Antonio SUÁREZ RIVERA, the last 2 rows). Birth date, country as an ISO 3166 code and the office held at the time of the conclave, in English.
