Subdivisions of Austria in German, Croatian, Hungarian and Slovenian

Austria is divided into nine states (Bundesländer) and, below them, into political districts (Bezirke) and statutory cities (Statutarstädte). This list gives every district with its seat in German, adds the Croatian and Hungarian names in Burgenland and the Slovenian names in Carinthia and Styria, and records the mergers of 2012 to 2017.

Bezirk, Statutarstadt and the minority names

Two kinds of unit share the level below the state. A Bezirk is run by a district authority, the Bezirkshauptmannschaft, whose head is an appointed official. A Statutarstadt is a city with its own charter whose mayor and magistrate carry out the same tasks, so the city stands outside any district. Several districts are named after the statutory city they surround: Eisenstadt-Umgebung, Klagenfurt-Land, Graz-Umgebung.

Three minority languages appear in the names. In Burgenland the Croatian name uses kotar for district and grad for city, so Bezirk Güssing is Kotar Novi Grad, and the Hungarian name turns the seat into an adjective with -i járás: Németújvári járás. In Carinthia and Styria the Slovenian word is okraj, and Klagenfurt am Wörthersee becomes Celovec ob Vrbskem jezeru.

08 · Changes

What changed between 2012 and 2023

The map of districts held for decades and then changed quickly. Styria merged eight districts into four: Judenburg and Knittelfeld became Murtal on 1 January 2012, and on 1 January 2013 Bruck an der Mur joined Mürzzuschlag, Hartberg joined Fürstenfeld and Feldbach joined Radkersburg, the last pair as Südoststeiermark. Lower Austria dissolved Wien-Umgebung on 1 January 2017 and handed its 21 municipalities to the districts around it.

Three seats moved without a change of name. Eferding has been run from Grieskirchen since 2016, Rohrbach from Rohrbach-Berg since the town merged with its neighbour in 2015, and Salzburg-Umgebung from Seekirchen am Wallersee since 2023. Austria now has 79 districts and 15 statutory cities, Vienna included.

09 · Questions

Questions about Austria's subdivisions

How many districts does Austria have?

79 political districts and 15 statutory cities, counted on 1 January 2017 after Wien-Umgebung was dissolved. Before the Styrian mergers of 2012 and 2013 there were 84 districts.

What is a Statutarstadt?

A city with its own charter that does the work of a district administration itself. Eisenstadt, Graz, Linz and Vienna are examples; Bregenz is the only state capital without one.

Which Austrian districts have names in other languages?

Those in Burgenland, which have Croatian and Hungarian names, and those in Carinthia and parts of Styria, which have Slovenian names.
