One province, three official names

Each province name appears in three official forms, and the differences are small but systematic. Spanish writes Provincia de, French Province de, Portuguese Província de. The compass words change with the language: Bioko Norte becomes Bioko Nord in French, Centro Sur becomes Centre Sud. Kie-Ntem and Wele-Nzas keep the same names in all three, joined by a hyphen in Spanish and French and by a space in Portuguese.

Annobón is the one province whose name changes outright. It is the smallest province, an island in the Gulf of Guinea and the only part of the country in the Southern Hemisphere, and most of its people speak a Portuguese creole. Portuguese writes the name Ano Bom, Spanish Annobón and French Annobon; the capital is San Antonio de Palé in all three languages.

Djibloho and the new capital

The province of Djibloho is the newest unit. It was carved out of Añisok district in Wele-Nzas, made an administrative city on 1 August 2015 and a province by law in 2017; ISO 3166-2 added it as GQ-DJ on 24 November 2020. It consists of two urban districts, Ciudad de la Paz and Mbere. With the decree of 2 January 2026, Ciudad de la Paz became the capital of the country, and Malabo, the capital of Bioko Norte, gave up that role.
