Subdivisions of North Korea in Hangul and Hanja: provinces, counties
North Korea is divided into nine provinces (도), the capital Pyongyang and cities of provincial rank, and below them into counties (군), cities (시) and districts (구역). This list names all 194 second-level units of the 2016 edition in Hangul, McCune-Reischauer and Hanja, and adds Rasŏn as it stood in 2007.

Hangul first, Hanja second
Each unit is written in Hangul, the script North Korea uses alone, with the Hanja that the name stands for and the McCune-Reischauer romanisation. Two counties have no Hanja form in this list: 새별 (Saebyŏl) in North Hamgyong and 과일 (Kwail) in South Hwanghae. Pyongyang and P’yŏngan share the syllable 평 (平), and the seat of South P’yŏngan is P’yŏngsŏng, 평성 (平城), not the capital.
Ryanggang, the province with the fewest units in the list, eleven counties and the city of Hyesan, includes 김정숙 (Kimjŏngsuk), 김형직 (Kimhyŏngjik) and 김형권 (Kimhyŏnggwŏn) counties. Pyongyang is divided into districts (구역, kuyŏk) and four counties. South P’yŏngan lists Namp’o as a special-class city (특급시), and North Hamgyong lists Rasŏn as a city (라선시); the 2007 edition still had Rasŏn as a directly governed city (라선직할시) with one county and one district.
