Two languages, one set of district names
Each province carries two names: the English one used by ISO 3166-2 and the Tok Pisin one, so that Southern Highlands is Sauten Hailans Provins, the capital district Nesenel Kapitol Distrik and Bougainville the Otonomos Rijen bilong Bogenvil. District names do not change between the two languages; most are double names that join two areas, as Ialibu-Pangia or Kandrian-Gloucester.
The head town stands beside a district where the 2016 list recorded it, which it did only where the town differed from the district name, as Kerevat for Gazelle or Wasu for Tewae-Siassi. A district with no head town in the table either shares its name with its town or is missing from the 2016 list.

Districts: List of districts of Papua New Guinea, English Wikipedia, read on 28 October 2026, which draws on the ward profiles of the 2011 census of the National Statistical Office. Head towns and Tok Pisin names: the 2016 edition of this list. Provinces and codes: ISO 3166-2:PG, same date.
Hela, Jiwaka and the other differences from the 2016 list
The two provinces created in May 2012 took their districts from the Highlands. Hela received Koroba-Kopiago, Tari-Pori and Komo-Magarima, now listed as Magarima, together with the new Komo-Hulia; Southern Highlands kept five districts. Jiwaka took Anglimp-South Waghi, Jimi and North Waghi from Western Highlands, which kept Dei, Mount Hagen, Mul-Baiyer and Tambul-Nebilyer.
Elsewhere the count rose by splitting. Enga divided Lagaip-Porgera into Lagaip and Porgera-Paiela, Central divided Kairuku-Hiri into Kairuku and Hiri-Koiari, and Morobe, West New Britain, Oro and Western each gained a district: Wau-Waria, Nakanai, Popondetta and Delta Fly. The National Capital District, listed without districts in 2016, now counts three, one for each part of Port Moresby.
