Subdivisions of Romania in Romanian, Hungarian and German: județe
Romania is divided into 41 counties (județe) and the municipality of Bucharest. This list gives each county with its seat and ISO 3166-2 code, then the 314 urban places of the counties, 102 municipalities (municipii) and 212 towns (orașe), with the Hungarian name for 134 of them and the German name for 96.

Three names for one town
Romanian is the official language of Romania, but in the west and centre of the country many towns also have a Hungarian name, and a good number a German one. Alba Iulia is Gyulafehérvár in Hungarian and Karlsburg in German; Cluj-Napoca is Kolozsvár and Klausenburg; Brașov is Brassó and Kronstadt.
Counties follow the same pattern. Hungarian adds megye, county, to the name, so Arad becomes Arad megye, while Alba becomes Fehér megye, a name of its own. German uses Bezirk, as in Bezirk Kronstadt. Counties such as Bacău, Iași, Dolj or Constanța have no Hungarian or German forms in the list, and neither do their towns.

The municipii, the larger towns that include every county seat, come first in each county, followed by the orașe. The Hungarian and German columns are filled where the list records a name that differs from the Romanian one.

Names that do not translate
Many Hungarian and German names are not translations of the Romanian ones but separate names with their own history. Sighișoara is Segesvár and Schäßburg, Târgu Mureș is Marosvásárhely and Neumarkt am Mieresch, and Anina in the Banat is Stájerlakanina in Hungarian and Steierdorf-Anina in German.
In Covasna and Harghita every town in the list has a Hungarian name, and only some have a German one: Sfântu Gheorghe is Sepsiszentgyörgy and Miercurea-Ciuc is Csíkszereda, while Szeklerburg is the German form of Miercurea-Ciuc. Where the list gives no Hungarian or German name, as for Oțelu Roșu in German, the cell stays empty.

What is Arad County called in Hungarian?
Arad megye; the town of Arad keeps its name in Hungarian.
What is Anina called in Hungarian?
Stájerlakanina. German has Steierdorf-Anina.
What is the difference between a municipiu and an oraș?
Both are towns; municipiu is the higher rank, held by most county seats and other larger towns, while oraș is the ordinary town. Buftea, the seat of Ilfov, is an oraș.
