Latin lists five names, from Romania and Rumania to the older Dacoromania and Dacia; Irish writes An Rómáin or An Rúmáin.
România, Rumänien, Румыния: o or u
Romania has one name in Romanian, România, which is also its full official name; there is no Republic of in front of it. The adjective is român, the language română, and the currency is 1 leu = 100 bani.
Two spellings meet abroad. English, Finnish, Italian, Swahili and Latin keep the o of Romania; German and Swedish write Rumänien, Indonesian and Javanese Rumania, Polish Rumunia, Czech and Slovak Rumunsko, and most Cyrillic alphabets Румыния (Rumynija). Hungarian and Northern Sami say Románia, Turkish, Zazaki and Kurdish Romanya. Macedonian Романија and Slovenian Romunija keep the o.
The neighbours each have their own Bucharest: Turkish Bükreş, Bulgarian Букурещ, Serbian Букурешт / Bukurešt and Albanian Bukureshti, while Russian has Бухарест with an h sound.

Codes: ISO 3166-2:RO, as tabulated in Wikipedia’s ISO 3166-2:RO, checked 28 October 2026; ISO calls the counties departments and has not changed the list since Ilfov (RO-IF) was added in December 2002. Names and seats: the 2017 edition of this list.
Județul and municipiu: how the counties are named
Every county name in Romanian starts with Județul, the county of: Județul Cluj, Județul Iași. The seat is a municipiu, the higher rank of town, and many counties share the name of their seat, such as Arad, Bacău or Constanța. Others carry the name of a river or region: Argeș has Pitești, Cluj has Cluj-Napoca and Harghita has Miercurea-Ciuc.
Ilfov, around Bucharest, is the youngest county; ISO gave it the code RO-IF in 2002, and its seat is Buftea. The capital itself is not part of any county and has its own code, RO-B.
Deșteaptă-te, române!, the national anthem
The poem by Andrei Mureșanu, Romania’s anthem since 1990, in four stanzas in Romanian.
