Regions and governorates in Arabic script
Each region carries the word منطقة, minṭaqâ, before its name, as in منطقة الرياض (Minṭaqâẗu r-Riyāḍ), the Riyadh Region. In every region the capital is also one of the governorates. The capital of the Riyadh Region is given as الرياض العاصمة (ar-Riyāḍu l-ʿĀṣimâ), Riyadh the capital, while the governorate in the list below is plain الرياض.
The romanisation follows DIN 31635. The article al- is assimilated to a following sun letter, so الرياض is ar-Riyāḍ and الدمام ad-Dammām, and the tāʾ marbūṭa at the end of a word is shown as â, or as âẗ where it is pronounced, as in Minṭaqâẗu.

Governorates: the 2016 edition of this list. Its heading for Al Bahah announces six governorates and names seven; all seven are given. In the Mecca Region, مدينة الملك عبد الله الاقتصادية is written here with the standard spelling of الاقتصادية.
From three governorates to twenty
The regions differ widely. The Riyadh Region lists twenty governorates, Jazan fourteen and Asir twelve, while Al Jawf and the Northern Borders have three each. In the Eastern Region الأحساء (al-Aḥsāʾ) is a governorate of its own beside Dammam, and in Jazan so is فرسان (Farasān).
Several names repeat at two levels. Tabuk, Hail, Najran and Jazan each name a region, its capital and a governorate; Al Bahah does the same. Where the capital differs, as in Al Jawf with Sakaka or the Northern Borders with Arar, the governorate takes the name of the capital town.
