Taiwan, Tajvan, Formosa, Đài Loan: names in two traditions

Most languages take the name from the Chinese 臺灣 (Táiwān) through English and fit it to their own spelling: Taiwán in Spanish, Tajwan in Polish, Tajvan in Croatian, Hungarian and Slovenian, Tchajwan in Czech, Tævan in Icelandic and Тайвань (Tajvan’) in Russian. Irish writes An Téaváin, with the article.

Two older strands survive at the edges of the list. Latin gives Formosa beside Taivania, and Norman French Formôse. The languages of East Asia have forms of their own: Japanese reads the name Taiwan, Vietnamese says Đài Loan and Korean 대만 (Daeman).

Chinese names on this page appear in two forms separated by a slash, as in 臺灣/台湾 or 臺北/台北: the first in traditional characters, the second in simplified characters. The first character of the name differs between the two, 臺 against 台.

Six special municipalities since Taoyuan

Six of the 22 units are special municipalities, 直轄市: Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei and Taoyuan. Taoyuan is the newest; on 25 December 2014 Taoyuan County was upgraded to Taoyuan City. ISO 3166-2 adjusted its entry in November 2015: Taoyuan changed category, the codes for the former Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taipei and Taichung counties were deleted, and Kinmen, Lienchiang and New Taipei received codes of their own.

The codes cover the islands of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu. Matsu is Lienchiang County, with its seat at Nangan, 南竿; Penghu is governed from Magong and Kinmen from Jincheng.
