Double names, Dutch names, numbered villages
Each of Guyana's ten region names joins two names with a hyphen: Barima-Waini, Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo. The places below are the communities the source listed for each region, from the capital Georgetown and the town of New Amsterdam to settlements named for a mission or a mine, such as Saint Bede’s Mission, Hawkins Mission, Arimu Mine and Peters Mine.
The coastal regions keep many Dutch names: Vreed en Hoop, the centre of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Beterverwagting and Werk en Rust in Demerara-Mahaica, Meten-Meer-Zorg and Uitvlugt on the west bank, Onderneeming and Zorg-en-Light in Pomeroon-Supenaam. East Berbice-Corentyne has a run of numbered villages, from Number 43 to Number 80, and Mahaica-Berbice has Number 2, 12, 40 and 41.
Several names occur in more than one region. Bartica is the centre of Cuyuni-Mazaruni and appears again in Upper Demerara-Berbice, Paradise, the centre of Demerara-Mahaica, recurs in two other regions, and Bush Lot is listed three times.
