Guyana, Guiana, Gujana: spelling one name

English, Spanish, German, Turkish and most languages that use Latin letters write Guyana. The variant Guiana survives in Corsican, Occitan, Sicilian and Portuguese, and Latin allows Guiana beside Guyana. French lists Guyane beside Guyana, and Turkish lists the short Guyan beside the long form.

Where y is no vowel letter the name is respelled: Polish, Maltese, Faroese and Albanian write Gujana, Croatian and Slovenian Gvajana, Icelandic Gvæjana, Estonian Guajaana and Irish An Ghuáin, with the article. Russian and most Cyrillic alphabets read the first syllable as Гай-, Гайана, Gajana, while Macedonian and Serbian have Гвајана and Bulgarian lists Гвиана beside Гайана.

Georgetown is mostly copied letter for letter or by sound: Джорджтаун in Russian, Ջորջթաուն in Armenian, ジョージタウン in Japanese, 喬治敦 in Chinese. A few languages translate it. Scottish Gaelic says Baile Dheòrsa, George's town, Aymara Marka Xorxi and Esperanto Georgtaŭno.
