Singapura, Xīnjiāpō, Ciṅkappūr

Singapore has four official languages, and the state name exists in each: Republic of Singapore, Republik Singapura, 新加坡共和国 and சிங்கப்பூர் குடியரசு (Ciṅkappūr Kuṭiyaracu). Malay is also the national language, and the anthem, Majulah Singapura by Zubir Said, adopted on 11 November 1959, is sung in Malay. Malay can be written in Jawi, an Arabic-based script, as سيڠاڤورا.

The name goes back through Malay Singapura to the Sanskrit सिंहपुर (Siṃhapura), lion city. Languages of the region keep that form: Indonesian and Javanese say Singapura, Hindi सिंगापुर (Siṃgāpur), and Thai สิงคโปร์. Chinese writes the sound as 新加坡 (Xīnjiāpō) and Japanese as シンガポール (Shingapōru).

Elsewhere the spelling adapts lightly: Singapur in Spanish, Czech, German and Russian Сингапур, Singapour in French, Szingapúr in Hungarian. City and state share one name, so a separate capital list would repeat the same words; the Chinese form 新加坡市 (Xīnjiāpō shì) adds the word for city.

The five districts of Singapore in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil

ISO 3166-2:SG has coded five districts since November 2007, SG-01 to SG-05. They are the districts of the Community Development Councils, which run social and community programmes; Singapore has no provinces and no district capitals.

04 · Districts

Five districts without capitals

The Community Development Councils were set up in 1997, nine at first, and reduced to five in 2001. Their borders follow groups of electoral constituencies and change with general elections, so the five ISO districts describe administrative areas, not fixed regions.
